Have you ever been called to a client’s house to troubleshoot a problem, only to realize that the issue was as simple as tweaking the thermostat? If you’ve been working in the HVAC field for any significant amount of time, there’s a good chance this has happened to you more than once. All too often, clients fail to understand how their thermostats work, and as a result, they may not be optimizing their systems properly.
By educating your clients on some of the most common thermostat symbols, you can empower clients—and maybe avoid some of those unnecessary service calls! Use these basic explanations to teach your client what each symbol means.
Plus and Minus Symbols
Perhaps the most basic symbols you’ll see on any digital thermostat are the plus and minus symbols, which are used to raise or lower the temperature as needed. Though it seems intuitive, explain that a plus symbol will increase the ambient temperature, whereas a minus symbol will lower it.
Cooling Mode Symbols
Some thermostats will indicate the air conditioning is on with clear text that reads “AC On” or “Cool On.” Other thermostats may use snowflake symbols to indicate the same thing. Either way, it simply means that the system is in cooling mode.
Heating Mode Symbols
A system that is operating in heat mode will most likely have some sort of symbol representing the sun or a flame. Some thermostats will say “Heat On.” Keep in mind that this only applies to systems with reverse cycle features.
Water Drop Symbols
For air conditioners that have dehumidification systems, clients may see a water droplet icon on the thermostat screen. Usually, what this symbol means is that the air conditioner is running in dry mode to remove excess moisture from the air. The system will continue to cool during this time, so cold air should still be coming out of the vents.
Fan Symbols
Many systems have a ventilation mode that runs a fan to circulate air. This is usually signified by a fan icon on the thermostat. Additional symbols may appear on the screen to indicate the speed of the fan itself. Normally, this is shown as a series of bars (like what you would see on your phone to show the strength of the signal). The more bars, the more power with which the fan is operating.
These are just a few of the most common symbols that your clients may see on their thermostats during regular operation. You should especially take time to explain the symbols for the functions available with their specific AC and heating systems so they can be better informed. And of course, if a symbol appears that your clients haven’t seen before (or if there are other issues with their systems), tell them to contact you for additional guidance.
